Kolkata, Oct 18 (NationPress) Tragically, two young individuals lost their lives and three others were injured when the car they were in veered off the road and fell into a gorge near Kurseong, located in the Darjeeling district of north Bengal on Saturday.
The incident took place in the Tinghumti region along Pankhabari Road. As per police reports, the vehicle lost control while making a turn and plummeted into the ravine.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Abhishek Roy, stated, “An accident occurred in the morning. Tragically, two people died at the scene. Three others sustained injuries. All are from Naxalbari near Siliguri. The injured are currently receiving treatment at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.”
The victims have been identified as Sumit Singh from Naxalbari block and Rajesh Paswan from Kotia Jot. The injured individuals—Raj Das and Tarak Biswas from Rathkhola, along with Karan Thakur from Kotia Jot—were rescued and taken to the hospital.
Authorities mentioned that the five youths had embarked on a late-night drive in the hills on Friday and were on their way back home when the incident occurred. Local residents promptly alerted the authorities following the crash.
Rescue operations were conducted by personnel from both Kurseong and Garidhura police stations, alongside fire brigade teams.
Singh and Paswan were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter.
This incident follows a similar tragedy that occurred weeks ago in the hills post-Durga Puja, where four individuals lost their lives and three were injured when a car plunged into a 50-meter-deep ditch in the Teesta River near Kalimpong on October 4.
