Kolkata, Oct 18 (NationPress) The convoy of BJP's Darjeeling MP Raju Bista was violently attacked by unknown assailants on Saturday evening in the Sukhia Pokhari area of north Bengal.
In a post on his social media account, the BJP MP disclosed the details of the incident.
"In Masdhura, near Sukhia Pokhari today, my convoy was assaulted by unidentified miscreants. Although these cowards targeted me, the brunt of the attack struck the vehicle directly behind mine. The timing of this assault, following the announcement of an interlocutor for our region, raises significant suspicions and suggests a plot to disrupt peace in our area," Bista stated.
He was alluding to the Centre’s recent decision to appoint a government representative to address Gorkha issues in Darjeeling, Dooars, and the Terai region of north Bengal.
"Those who are loyal to Kolkata believe that such attacks will intimidate us are mistaken. We are not afraid; these cowardly acts only strengthen our resolve. I caution those who attempted to instigate unrest today—we will not permit your plans to succeed. We are committed to achieving lasting peace in our region, and no force can hinder that," the BJP MP asserted.
This incident follows recent attacks on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Shankar Ghosh in the Nagrakata area of Jalpaiguri district.
In response to the attack, Union Minister of State for Education and DoNER Sukanta Majumdar condemned the assault on Bista's convoy.
"Following the recent attacks on Hon’ble MP from Maldah North, Shri Khagen Murmu, and Hon’ble MLA from Siliguri, Shri Shankar Ghosh, yet another despicable and cowardly conspiracy unfolded today. This time targeting our Hon’ble MP from Darjeeling, Shri @RajuBistaBJP Ji, through hired miscreants. In the sudden assault, the vehicle behind his car was damaged, but by the grace of the Almighty, Raju ji is safe," Majumdar posted on social media.
"I strongly condemn this vile attack. To those orchestrating this filthy conspiracy, my message is crystal clear: the people of North Bengal are vigilantly monitoring every moment of your lawlessness. The people of North Bengal, and indeed all of Bengal, will ensure a fitting response to such disgraceful conduct. The @BJP4Bengal does not fear attacks carried out through hired goons, and neither a BJP public representative nor a Karyakarta can ever be intimidated or silenced," the Union Minister added.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed strong opposition to the Centre’s appointment of a government interlocutor regarding Gorkha issues in Darjeeling, Dooars, and Terai, describing the decision as "unilateral" and made without consultation with the state government.
The Chief Minister argued that such decisions undermine state authority and could disrupt the delicate socio-political balance in the hills.
