Kolkata, Jan 1 (NationPress) For years, students enrolled in Bengali-medium schools in West Bengal have struggled with a profound apprehension towards the English language. This lack of confidence in speaking, writing, and comprehending English often leads to academic setbacks for many. In an effort to tackle this persistent issue, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has launched a dedicated initiative.
A special workshop has been scheduled at the start of the new year aimed at assisting these students in overcoming their fears associated with the English language and enhancing their confidence.
According to a senior official from the state Education Department, the specialized training camp will take place at Vidyasagar Bhavan in Salt Lake from January 5 to January 9. This workshop, organized by WBCHSE, is expected to attract students from over 150 Bengali-medium schools throughout the state.
During this five-day program, approximately 2,000 students will receive hands-on training in the English language. Classes will occur in two sessions each day, with around 200 students participating in each session.
The workshop is targeting Class XI students who have chosen English as their second language. The Council has noted that students from Bengali-medium backgrounds often exhibit reluctance and anxiety when it comes to speaking and writing in English.
Officials emphasize that proficiency in English is critical for success in higher education and future career prospects. Bearing this in mind, the Council has initiated this program to help students overcome their fears and enhance their communication skills.
Priyadarshini Mallick, Secretary of the WBCHSE, stated, “This initiative seeks to dissolve the fear of English prevalent among students in Bengali-medium schools. Initially, we are focusing on students from select districts, but we plan to gradually expand this training to students across all districts in the state.”
In the initial phase, students from schools in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, parts of Howrah, and Kolkata have been selected to participate in the workshop.
Educationists believe that if this initiative proves successful, it could significantly enhance English language learning among students in Bengali-medium schools in West Bengal.
