Bengaluru, March 12 (NationPress) In a groundbreaking initiative, Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru has unveiled a sensory room aimed at supporting individuals dealing with autism, anxiety, and various mental health challenges, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

Situated near the 080 International Lounge on Level 4 of Terminal 2, this sensory room is a meticulously designed space intended for neurodivergent passengers and those with sensory sensitivities.

“Airports can be overwhelming due to bright lights, constant announcements, security checks, and crowded environments—elements that can be particularly tough for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), anxiety disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and other sensory or mental health conditions. To counteract these difficulties, the sensory room at Bengaluru airport provides a tranquil and controlled space, enabling passengers to feel more comfortable before their journeys,” the statement elaborated.

Hari Marar, MD and CEO of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), stated, “We are dedicated to creating an inclusive and passenger-centric airport. Bengaluru airport has consistently focused on integrating cutting-edge innovations, from our biophilic, sustainable Terminal 2 to digital solutions that boost efficiency. The introduction of the sensory room is in line with our goal of offering a seamless and stress-free experience for every traveler, ensuring that inclusivity is not merely an aspect but a fundamental principle for us.”

Supported by research in behavioral science and occupational therapy, the sensory room at Terminal 2 is designed to deliver a soothing, engaging, and therapeutic environment for those with sensory sensitivities.

Studies in sensory regulation and occupational therapy show that even short durations (15–30 minutes) spent in a calming, sensory-friendly environment can significantly reduce feelings of being overwhelmed and improve well-being, facilitating smoother and more manageable travel experiences. This advantage aids both neurodivergent children and adults, helping them navigate their travel experiences with increased ease and comfort.

Crafted in partnership with Incluzza, a leader in disability inclusion, this initiative underscores the significance of sensory-friendly spaces in enhancing emotional regulation, diminishing stress, and improving overall travel experiences.

Dipesh Sutariya, Chairman and Managing Director of EnAble India, commented, “We at Incluzza are honored to collaborate with BIAL in designing and establishing this sensory room. The disability inclusion office by Incluzza, powered by EnAble India, was launched in 2023 in partnership with BIAL, showcasing their strong commitment to inclusion. The Sensory Room is one among several inclusion initiatives BIAL has pursued to ensure every passenger enjoys a positive experience. It is encouraging to witness accessibility being driven by thoughtful, proactive measures. We anticipate this marks the start of many more similar initiatives throughout the country.”

Key features of the sensory room include a variety of ambient lighting sources—such as a bubble tube, galaxy projector, and LED cubes—that provide diverse sensory stimulation, promote visual tracking, and allow for personalized sensory input.

The art mural, featuring organic abstract shapes, enhances emotional well-being through visually soothing designs.

Interactive components like floor and wall projections, a ball pool, and a sensory toy station are among the elements designed for cognitive engagement.

Specialized items like a crash pad, weighted blanket, and therapy mats assist with emotional regulation and relaxation.

Visual and tactile features—including an optical curtain, infinity mirror, and tactile wall panels—encourage sensory exploration, while auditory components like the white noise machine and sound system help create a consistent and calming environment.

Moreover, features such as a balance board, lava lamp, and aroma diffuser enhance focus and alleviate stress.

The space is thoughtfully curated to accommodate varying sensory needs, ensuring adaptability and inclusivity for all users. By combining visual, tactile, auditory, and movement-based stimulation, the Sensory Room aims to serve as a sanctuary for relaxation and self-regulation.
