Bengaluru, Nov 10 (NationPress) The Karnataka government has taken decisive action by suspending three officials at Bengaluru Central Prison, including the Chief Jail Superintendent, following the release of videos that revealed preferential treatment extended to radical individuals, a serial rapist, and other offenders within the facility.
Home Minister G. Parameshwara announced these measures after a high-level discussion with prison management. He also confirmed the establishment of a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the situation.
The suspended officials include Chief Jail Superintendent K. Suresh, Superintendent Myageri, and Deputy Superintendent Ashok Bajantri.
Minister Parameshwara remarked, 'There have been serious allegations of illegal activities occurring in Bengaluru Central Jail. Media reports, particularly those showcasing videos from 2023 and a few months prior, have caught my attention.'
'A high-level committee, led by ADGP (Law and Order) R. Hitendra, has been formed to investigate this matter. Esteemed IPS officers Sandeep Patil, Amarnath Reddy, and C.B. Rishyant will also be part of this committee, which is expected to deliver its findings within a month,' he elaborated.
With approximately 5,000 inmates currently in Bengaluru Central Prison, including both convicts and undertrials, there are plans to establish a command center that should be operational within 15 days.
Parameshwara also announced that an IPS officer will be appointed to oversee the prison department moving forward.
Furthermore, he stated, 'Every five years, jail officials will undergo mandatory transfers. Individuals who remain in the same position for extended periods will be reassigned. Those likely to misuse their influence will also be relocated.'
Instructions have been issued to address the staffing shortages within the prison system, with recruitment efforts set to be conducted via the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC). Approximately 1,000 personnel, including Assistant Superintendents, are anticipated to be hired.
According to the Home Minister, alleviating the staff shortage is crucial for the effective management of prisons.
Serious allegations of security breaches and favoritism within Parappana Agrahara Central Jail emerged last Saturday after viral videos surfaced, allegedly depicting notorious inmates—including one of India’s most infamous rapists and serial killers, Umesh Reddy—using mobile phones and indulging in snacks and alcohol, which embarrassed prison officials.
The leaked footage reportedly shows Umesh Reddy, convicted for the rape of 20 women and the murder of 18 women between 1996 and 2022, using two Android devices and a keypad phone inside the prison. His death penalty was commuted by the Supreme Court to 30 years without remission in 2022.
Even more concerning are allegations that the videos include suspected members of Lashkar-e-Taiba and other extremist groups using smartphones for communications, posing a significant threat to national security.
This controversy follows previous Supreme Court directives aimed at ensuring inmates do not receive special privileges, issued amid investigations into the fan murder case involving Kannada film star Darshan.
