Bhopal, April 17 (NationPress) A Bhopal court has instructed a renewed examination into the 'suicide' case of Congress leader Sarla Mishra, which took place 28 years ago in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
The court has deemed the entire investigation 'incomplete'.
Numerous deficiencies in the investigation have been identified by the court.
This development is likely to incite considerable political upheaval in the state.
Sarla Mishra, a notable and energetic Congress leader, succumbed 'due to severe burn injuries' on February 14, 1997, in Bhopal, during the reign of the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh under then Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh.
Magistrate Palak Rai, presiding over the court, has mandated a fresh police inquiry into the case following a protest petition filed by Sarla Mishra's brother, Anurag Mishra, against the previous investigation and closure report by the state police.
The initial police investigation had ruled Sarla Mishra's death a 'suicide', but the court found the 'investigation was inadequate' and has ordered a comprehensive review and reinvestigation of the case.
The TT Nagar police station, which managed the original investigation, will spearhead the renewed inquiry.
In a conversation with IANS, Anurag Mishra, who lodged a 'protest petition' contesting the previous investigation, accused former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh of being complicit in his sister's death, linking it to political rivalry.
Anurag Mishra has engaged in a prolonged legal battle, and the court's recent ruling to reopen the case is a significant development.
The TT Nagar police station is now assigned with executing this investigation.
Initially, Sarla Mishra's death was categorized as a 'suicide' following a police investigation.
The case was officially closed in 2000.
However, the court has now ruled that the 'investigation was inadequate' and has instructed the police to reevaluate the situation and produce a new report, as stated by Anurag Mishra.
This case has been a longstanding topic within state politics, with accusations also directed at Digvijaya Singh's brother, Laxman Singh.
During various elections, the BJP has utilized this issue to target Digvijaya Singh.
Although the closure of the case lessened its political ramifications, the court's latest order is expected to rekindle controversy, granting the BJP an opportunity to intensify attacks on Digvijaya Singh and the Congress party.
In the meantime, the Congress party's response to this matter will be under scrutiny.
Former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha member Digvijaya Singh may encounter increased challenges with the reopening of the case.
Anurag Mishra has reiterated his accusations against Digvijaya Singh, asserting that his sister was murdered due to political animosity.
Expressing contentment over the court's decision, Anurag Mishra conveyed his hope for justice.
