Patna, Oct 3 (NationPress) The Cabinet led by Nitish Kumar took significant steps on Friday to enhance Bihar’s air connectivity and improve electoral infrastructure.

In a pivotal move, the Cabinet provided administrative consent for the acquisition of land and associated compensation for two major airport initiatives in Saharsa and Bhagalpur.

For the Saharsa Airport project, an additional 1,208.891 acres of land will be acquired to extend the runway.

The government has approved a compensation package amounting to Rs 147.76 crore, facilitating passenger services in the Mithila region.

This long-awaited expansion is anticipated to transform Saharsa into a commercial and tourism hub.

For the proposed Bhagalpur Greenfield Airport located in the Sultanganj zone, the Cabinet has sanctioned the acquisition of 931 acres of land with a compensation of Rs 472.72 crore.

As a greenfield project, this airport will be constructed from the ground up, establishing a significant air hub for Bhagalpur and its neighboring districts.

These initiatives are part of Bihar’s comprehensive strategy to enhance regional air connectivity under the UDAN scheme, following the successful establishment of Darbhanga and Purnea Airports, along with ongoing developments at the Bihta Civil Enclave near Patna.

In another essential decision, the Cabinet sanctioned the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the upcoming 2026 Panchayat General Elections.

A total of Rs 208.27 crore has been allocated for the acquisition of multi-post EVMs, detachable memory modules, totaliser machines, and power packs from ECIL Hyderabad on a nomination basis. This initiative is set to enhance efficiency and transparency in local body elections.

Officials noted that these dual measures—expanding infrastructure and implementing electoral reforms—underscore the government’s commitment to improving connectivity and governance in Bihar.

The Cabinet also endorsed the promotion of the Vishnupad Temple in Gayaji along the lines of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, aimed at elevating religious tourism in Bihar to unprecedented levels.

During the Cabinet meeting chaired by CM Nitish Kumar, a total of 129 proposals were approved.

Point of View

The recent decisions made by the Bihar government reflect a proactive approach toward infrastructure development and electoral reforms.
