Key Takeaways
Patna, Dec 29 (NationPress) An astonishing development has emerged in the ongoing investigation into the multi-crore theft at the renowned Thave Durga Temple in Bihar's Gopalganj, leaving both law enforcement and the public in disbelief.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Gopalganj police undertook a relentless 24-hour excavation, driven by the signals from metal detectors.
During this operation, two invaluable Ashtadhatu idols of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita were unearthed from underground on Monday.
This significant breakthrough occurred during a second raid at the residence of the absconding primary suspect, Sharif Alam, in the Arar area under the jurisdiction of the Town police station.
Following intelligence that the stolen artifacts were buried on the property, police secured the entire vicinity and initiated a thorough search.
With the help of a technical team, metal detectors, and substantial police presence, every inch of the location, including the rooms, courtyard, cowshed, and surrounding areas, was meticulously examined.
The excavation revealed highly prized Ashtadhatu idols of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita, alongside various other dubious items such as soap, a sewing machine, shoes, aluminum electrical wires, and jewelry.
According to police sources, the idols were stolen from a temple in Chhapra and had been concealed underground, covered with bricks and paving stones to eliminate traces.
In connection with this case, four family members of the fugitive suspect have been arrested, including his wife Shabba Khatun, mother Madina Khatun, and sisters Tabbu and Sabbu.
During their interrogation, all four provided critical insights, significantly propelling the investigation forward.
The accused women underwent medical examinations at Sadar Hospital under the surveillance of female police officers, after which the process for their court appearance and subsequent incarceration commenced.
Gopalganj Superintendent of Police Awadhesh Dixit confirmed that the SIT's investigation is progressing.
"Numerous suspicious items associated with the theft were recovered during the excavation on Monday, and it is believed that the fugitive suspect still possesses a significant portion of the stolen temple valuables," Dixit stated.
Police sources indicated that substantial parts of Goddess Durga's gold crown, necklace, and umbrella remain unaccounted for.
Acting on new leads, a joint task force from the Special Task Force and Gopalganj police has intensified search efforts to recover the outstanding treasures.
The shocking theft took place on the night of December 17-18, when unidentified thieves infiltrated the sanctum sanctorum of the Thave Durga Temple, making off with gold ornaments valued in crores.
The crime was discovered on the morning of December 19, sparking widespread outrage across Bihar and putting immense pressure on law enforcement.
All eyes are now on whether fugitive Sharif Alam will be apprehended soon and if all of Goddess Durga's stolen ornaments will be retrieved.
However, Gopalganj police remain optimistic that this high-profile temple theft case will reach resolution shortly.
