What Did the SIT Uncover in the Sabarimala Gold Theft Case?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kochi, Jan 6 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has presented a comprehensive report to the Kerala High Court, revealing a meticulously plotted conspiracy behind the Sabarimala gold smuggling scandal.
The report indicates that the accused had executed a large-scale theft, involving key figures such as the primary suspect Unnikrishnan Potti, Pankaj Bhandari, and gold trader Govardhan from Bellary.
The investigation portrays the crime as organized and carried out with extensive planning to avoid detection.
According to the SIT report, the conspirators held a secret meeting in Bengaluru in October 2025 to strategize the operation, which was uncovered during the Kerala High Court's proceedings.
During this gathering, they allegedly discussed measures to take if caught, as well as tactics to hide their conspiracy.
Investigators outlined how gold was illicitly removed from the Sree Kovil (sanctum sanctorum) of the temple, including from door-guardian sculptures and seven-part plank panels.
Expert Shankar from Smart Creations retrieved 409 grams of gold from the plank panels, which subsequently made its way to trader Govardhan.
The SIT pointed out that substantial sums of money associated with temple donations had been funneled through dubious accounts, indicating efforts to obscure the crime.
The SIT has stressed that the theft qualifies as a significant, premeditated robbery and that a scientific evaluation of the recovered gold is essential to determine the full scale of the theft.
The investigation team has urged the court to deny bail to the accused until the examination is finished.
The High Court had previously extended the investigation duration at the request of the SIT, with the Devaswom Bench allowing an additional six weeks for further inquiry.
The SIT is set to provide its next interim report on January 19.
A total of 15 individuals are implicated in smuggling gold from door-guardian sculptures and 12 from plank panels.
Currently, 10 suspects have been arrested and are in judicial custody.
The SIT report, which meticulously documents the conspiracy, is anticipated to significantly influence the upcoming phases of the judicial process.
