Is the BJP Responsible for the Unrest and Communal Divide in Manipur?

Key Takeaways
Imphal, Oct 31 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Manipur and seasoned Congress figure Okram Ibobi Singh accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday of instigating prolonged unrest and fostering a growing communal divide in the region. He emphasized that the ongoing strife is "the unavoidable consequence of the BJP's erroneous policies and political hubris".
Singh, who served as Chief Minister for three terms from 2002 to 2017, asserted that the ethnic conflict in Manipur stems from the BJP's misguided governance, mismanagement, and overconfidence.
During a commemorative event hosted by the Manipur Pradesh Congress at Congress Bhavan, several senior Congress leaders, including Singh, gathered to honor the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the 41st death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The veteran Congress figure criticized the BJP's attempts to showcase normalcy through public events like the upcoming Sangai Festival, stating it cannot mask the suffering and insecurity of the thousands of displaced individuals currently residing in relief camps across the state.
"The government may aim to portray peace in Manipur to the nation, but the reality is known to its people. The state continues to suffer, and the government has utterly failed to address the crisis," Singh remarked.
He also pointed out that issues that had clear plans during the previous Congress-led UPA government, such as the India-Myanmar border fencing, have been mismanaged under the BJP administration.
Singh recalled that between 2010 and 2011, the UPA government had allocated funds for a 10 km fencing project, and the Free Movement Regime (FMR) was established to facilitate limited cross-border interactions, maintaining a balance between security and community engagement.
He contended that the BJP's approach to border issues has not only muddled policies but also caused alienation among communities in Manipur.
Accusing the BJP of "dividing communities for political advantage," Singh highlighted that the ruling party's silence and indecisiveness during the state's most severe humanitarian crisis in decades indicates a complete governance breakdown.
"BJP leaders promised peace but delivered chaos. They spoke of integrity yet destroyed trust," the former CM stated.
As the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), Singh acknowledged Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's significant role in unifying princely states into a single nation.
He remarked, "Indira Gandhi represented strength, determination, and decisive leadership, working tirelessly for the nation's harmony and integrity."
Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh and other party members paid their respects with floral tributes to the portraits of both leaders.
Additionally, Congress leaders and activists united in a pledge to safeguard and uphold the nation's unity and integrity.
