Imphal, Aug 13 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh called on the citizens to embrace unity, transcending political ideologies and beliefs, to restore peace and stability in the region.
"It is imperative that we ensure peaceful coexistence in our state," he stated.
During the 134th Patriots Day celebrations, Manipur Congress President, Keisham Meghachandra Singh, criticized the Union government's lack of a viable plan to address the ongoing ethnic strife between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which has plagued the state since May 2023.
In his address, Biren Singh recalled the bravery of Yubraj Tikendrajit, Thangal General, and others who fought valiantly against the British Empire in 1891, despite the odds stacked against them. "Patriots Day serves as a reminder to honor those who laid down their lives for our homeland in that historic battle 134 years ago. Manipur carries the legacy of its forefathers," he emphasized.
Having resigned from his post as Chief Minister on February 9, just before the imposition of President's Rule due to ongoing violence, Singh stressed the necessity of setting aside political differences for the greater good of the state.
"We must unite to restore peace and harmony for the future generations. I appeal to everyone to come together for the state's development and the welfare of all," he urged.
Earlier in the day, he, along with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, MLAs, and senior leaders, paid homage to Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit Singh and other patriots during a state-level event honoring the fallen heroes of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
Every year on August 13, Manipur observes Patriots Day to commemorate the execution of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General by the British for their rebellion.
Meanwhile, the Congress President, attending a separate event at Congress Bhavan, reiterated that the Union government lacks a practical strategy for restoring peace in the region. "There has been insufficient funding from the Centre for rebuilding the homes and properties of those affected by the violence, as well as for rehabilitating the displaced," he stated.
He further mentioned that former Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh had previously announced a three-phase resettlement plan for the displaced by December this year, yet there has been a noticeable lack of initiative from the state government in resettling these individuals.
