Manipur Turmoil: Significant Progress Achieved, Yet More Challenges Ahead, Asserts CM Biren Singh

Imphal, Jan 1 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, spoke on Wednesday about the ongoing 20-month-long ethnic clashes in the state, highlighting that substantial efforts have been undertaken, yet there is still a considerable amount left to accomplish.
In his New Year address, the Chief Minister emphasized that the beginning of a new year is a moment for reflection and contemplation, not only for individuals but also for government operations.
“The year 2024 has proven to be challenging for our state. With the current law and order situation still causing unrest, many individuals are residing in relief camps or relying on the hospitality of friends and family. My primary concern is for them. Have we fulfilled their expectations? Have we managed to inspire hope for a return to normalcy and their former homes?”
The CM, who also oversees the Home department, reiterated that while significant progress has been made, much more effort is necessary.
He acknowledged that many still feel anguish, but assured that the government is empathetic, impartial, and equally invested in restoring peace and the quality of life the residents enjoyed earlier in 2023.
“Let us dismantle the walls of hatred and fear, and strive once more to provide ourselves and our children with the experience of life filled with generosity, sharing, and affection. I hope that the mistakes of the past will teach us valuable lessons,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Earlier that day, he shared a message on his X account, stating, “On this New Year's occasion, I send my best wishes to all residents of Manipur. As we welcome 2025, let us reaffirm our dedication to peace, harmony, and advancement for our state.”
CM Singh expressed his “regret and sorrow” for the unfortunate events that have unfolded due to the ethnic conflict that erupted in May of the previous year.
While addressing the press, the Chief Minister maintained an optimistic outlook as the year concludes, expressing hope for the restoration of peace and normalcy in the upcoming New Year 2025.
He stated, “I extend my apologies to all victims and their families.”
“It is deeply regrettable that many individuals have suffered the loss of loved ones and have been forced to flee their homes and villages. Nevertheless, given the positive changes witnessed over the past three to four months, I am hopeful that peace and normalcy will be reestablished in our state in 2025,” CM Singh remarked.
He highlighted that Manipur comprises 34 to 35 distinct communities and expressed his belief that, “We will coexist after forgiving the past.”
“I urge all communities to unite and work together to foster a prosperous Manipur,” the Chief Minister concluded.
