Manipur CM Criticizes Opposition for Politicizing His Apology on Ethnic Violence

Imphal, Jan 3 (NationPress) Manipur's Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Friday targeted opposition parties, asserting that those engaging in politics regarding his apology to the victims of violence are contributing to unrest within the state.

The Chief Minister emphasized that his administration's main goal is to restore peace and normalcy.

"I extend my apology to the innocent individuals who have lost their lives due to the violence, not to the militants who perished in the conflicts. Numerous innocent lives have been lost, and many have suffered the loss of loved ones. I apologize to them, but not to the militants," CM Singh explained in response to media questions concerning the opposition's disapproval of his gesture.

"Opposition leaders lack ideology and constructive thinking for the advancement of Manipur," he remarked.

On December 31, the Chief Minister expressed regret for the "unfortunate events" that transpired in the state due to the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023.

"The year 2024 concluded on a hopeful note. We aspire for peace and normalcy to return to the state in the New Year 2025," he stated.

"It is indeed tragic that many have lost their loved ones, and many others have been forced to flee their homes and villages. Nevertheless, given the positive developments over the last three to four months, I am optimistic that peace and normalcy will return to the state in the New Year 2025," CM Singh expressed.

Welcoming new Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the Chief Minister characterized him as a capable and dynamic individual.

He mentioned that Bhalla's previous experience as a former Union Home Secretary would greatly assist in establishing peace and normalcy.

"We have high expectations from the new Governor. He will undoubtedly employ his experience to foster peace," the Chief Minister remarked, adding, "The past is behind us; I urge all communities to come together, collaboratively seek a lasting resolution to the conflict, and strive for a prosperous Manipur."

Shortly after the Chief Minister's apology regarding the ethnic violence on December 31, the opposition Congress and its ally, the Communist Party of India, criticized him.

The opposition claimed that the Chief Minister's apology was insufficient and demanded his resignation for his "failure" to manage the ethnic violence.
