Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on 14 August 2025 called upon every citizen of the state to work collectively toward a peaceful, prosperous and united Manipur, as the state observed the 135th Patriots' Day with solemn ceremonies across Imphal. The occasion marks the anniversary of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, honouring the patriots who resisted British annexation.

Tributes at Historic Sites

The observance began in the morning with floral tributes at Hicham Yaicham Pat in Moirangkhom and at the Thangal Temple within the Palace Compound. In the afternoon, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Khemchand Singh led a wreath-laying ceremony at Kangla Uttra, joined by the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Cabinet Ministers, Members of the Legislative Assembly, and senior civil and police officials.

Governor Bhalla's Address

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla paid homage to Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General, Maharaj Kulachandra, and all patriots of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, saying their courage and sacrifice remained deeply etched in the collective memory of Manipur's people. He said the struggle of 1891 teaches that 'true courage lies in standing for what is right even in the face of great adversity.'

Bhalla stressed that Patriots' Day is not merely a commemoration of the past but an opportunity to draw lessons from history and work toward a better future. He called on citizens — especially the youth — to preserve Manipur's rich history, culture and heritage, uphold Constitutional values, and strengthen unity across all communities. 'The best tribute to the heroes would be to build a peaceful, prosperous, harmonious and inclusive Manipur, where every citizen can live with dignity and hope,' the Governor said.

Chief Minister's Call for Unity

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh recalled the fearless sacrifices of the patriots who fought for the protection and dignity of the motherland, saying their courage, dedication and service continue to inspire the people of Manipur. He appealed to every citizen to work with unity, dedication and a sense of responsibility, while preserving the state's history and heritage and respecting the sacrifices of their forebears.

Khemchand Singh also highlighted the achievements of Manipuri sportspersons at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games and other national and international platforms, saying their success reflects the talent and potential of Manipur's people. He emphasised the need for the younger generation to carry forward the legacy of those who came before them.

Police Gallantry Awards Announced

As part of the Patriots' Day observance, the Manipur Chief Minister's Police Medal for Gallantry was announced for five persons, along with the award of the Manipur Chief Minister's Police Medal for Outstanding Devotion to Duty to ten police personnel. The announcements underscore the state government's recognition of service and bravery within its security forces.

Context: Manipur's Ongoing Challenges

This year's Patriots' Day carries added weight. Manipur has been grappling with prolonged ethnic unrest since May 2023, making the calls for peace and unity from both the Governor and Chief Minister more than ceremonial. The emphasis on collective effort, Constitutional values and inter-community harmony reflects the pressing ground realities the state continues to navigate. Whether the political resolve translates into concrete reconciliation remains the defining question for Manipur's leadership going forward.
