New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday criticized the Congress for overlooking other significant Dalit figures, including Babu Jagjivan Ram, amid the uproar following Congress' call for a posthumous Bharat Ratna for the late Bahujan leader Kanshi Ram.

Recently, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advocating for the posthumous award for Kanshi Ram. Additionally, Mayawati, the chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), urged the government to expedite the recognition of the Dalit icon with the nation's highest civilian honor.

While addressing reporters outside Parliament, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey asserted that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had intended to award the Bharat Ratna to Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed during the Emergency, which led to Babu Jagjivan Ram's resignation from the Congress.

Dubey further emphasized that the Congress should prioritize its own leaders, stating, "Babu Jagjivan Ram, who contributed significantly to the freedom struggle, is being neglected in this discussion."

He questioned, "Why was Kanshi Ram not honored with the Bharat Ratna during the Congress' tenure? He passed away in 2006 while Congress held power until 2014."

Dubey remarked, "The Congress relied on his support to govern," implying a contradiction in their current demand.

The BJP MP also pointed out that if the criteria for the award include those who made substantial contributions, Ram Vilas Paswan should also be considered for the Bharat Ratna, alongside Kanshi Ram.

He challenged Rahul Gandhi to reflect on this issue, suggesting that the Congress owes an explanation for not awarding Bharat Ratna to Babu Jagjivan Ram, recognizing his status as a prominent freedom fighter.

BJP MP Dinesh Sharma added that the BJP values all its notable leaders. "Kanshi Ram was instrumental in forming a government with the BJP, and numerous schemes were initiated during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's administration to honor his legacy," he stated.

In response, Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh reiterated the necessity of granting Bharat Ratna to Kanshi Ram and urged the Central Government to act swiftly on Rahul Gandhi's request, asserting that it would enhance respect for Kanshi Ram.

Congress MP Jebi Mather expressed confidence in their leaders’ stance and highlighted Rahul Gandhi's firm position on the matter, urging attention from the government.
