Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma Critiques Congress on Ambedkar's Legacy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, April 14 (NationPress) Rajasthan's Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma delivered a pointed critique of the Congress party on Tuesday, claiming it has historically shown disrespect towards B.R. Ambedkar and has not adequately recognized his contributions to society.
During a public assembly, Sharma asserted that the Congress not only failed to provide Ambedkar with appropriate political opportunities but also postponed awarding him the prestigious Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.
He emphasized, “Ambedkar was a monumental personality who should have received the Bharat Ratna much sooner. It was only in 1990, under a government supported by the BJP, that he finally received this recognition.”
The Chief Minister went on to argue that the Congress leadership has been more focused on honoring its own members, neglecting deserving individuals like Ambedkar. He highlighted that while former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi were bestowed with the honor, Baba Saheb did not enjoy similar acknowledgment during his lifetime.
Sharma further criticized the Congress for its long-standing governance, claiming it has not adhered to the principles Ambedkar established. He stated, “The party that champions the Constitution has, in reality, violated it the most,” accusing Congress of exploiting issues affecting marginalized communities for electoral gain.
According to Sharma, Ambedkar was denied the recognition he rightfully deserved during Congress’s time in power, ultimately leading to his resignation from the Cabinet. This, he argued, reflects the Congress party's lack of appreciation for a leader who dedicated his life to promoting social justice and upholding constitutional values.
Reiterating his stance, the Chief Minister noted that the Congress has consistently failed both Ambedkar and the Constitution he helped to draft. He called for more than mere celebrations of his birth anniversary, urging political parties to genuinely embrace his ideals in governance and policy.
Sharma's comments come at a time when political leaders nationwide are commemorating Ambedkar Jayanti, reigniting discussions around legacy, recognition, and dedication to constitutional principles.
