Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Feb 5 (NationPress) The Rajasthan Assembly experienced frequent interruptions on Thursday as Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma addressed the debate on the Governor’s address.
Facing the Congress challenge directly, the Chief Minister expressed his willingness for an in-depth discussion in the Assembly, evaluating the performance of the previous five-year Congress government against the BJP’s two-year rule.
“The opposition has challenged me to a debate on five years versus two years, and I accept this challenge. I am presenting all pertinent documents before the House. Speaker, please schedule a time - I am completely ready for this discussion,” stated the Chief Minister.
After his address, the House was adjourned until February 11. Congress MLAs caused a commotion twice during the CM’s speech, first when he dismissed allegations related to the Special Investigation Report (SIR), and later when he declared his preparedness for the ‘two years versus five years’ debate.
The Chief Minister accused the opposition of engaging in moral grandstanding after losing power. “There seems to be a tendency to become wise when power is lost. When in power, one hand was holding the reins while the other was extending favours to relatives. Exams took place, but the questions were already known,” he remarked.
He criticized the previous Congress regime for neglecting hardworking youth. “Where was the morality then? One day, the chair was lost, and suddenly they began preaching. Those who were busy indulging are now lecturing against corruption,” Sharma added.
Without directly naming him, the Chief Minister pointed at Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra, stating that during Congress’s tenure, individuals seeking assistance were directed to a specific “Bada” where favours were dispensed.
In a further jab, the Chief Minister commented, “Integrity is not a post-retirement scheme. It must be practiced while in power. The youth do not need speeches; they require fair examinations.”
He sarcastically added that if the Leader of the Opposition could not recognize development, “I can provide glasses.”
The CM claimed that the Congress left behind a debt exceeding Rs 5.79 lakh crore. “They were aware they wouldn’t return to power, so they weakened the economy. After forming our government, we focused on reviving it,” he explained.
Earlier in the debate, Leader of the Opposition Tika Ram Jully launched a fierce critique of the BJP government, alleging that it prioritized branding over governance. “Whether work is being done or not, branding is in full swing. The Chief Minister creates reels. A contract worth Rs 8 crore has been awarded for branding. YouTube channels have been set up, yet they barely attract 100 viewers,” Jully stated.
He also ridiculed the instability in administration, saying, “The Chief Secretary left, the Principal Secretary left - we began to wonder who would leave next. We even questioned if the CM would change. But we want this CM to complete his full five-year term.”
He claimed that a senior minister had admitted in a legislative meeting that “due to one minister, people won’t even let us into villages.”
Touching on the Vande Mataram controversy, Jully asked pointedly, “Which part of Vande Mataram was omitted that caused the uproar? During the freedom struggle, the RSS initially rejected Vande Mataram and the tricolour. Can any BJP MLA here tell me which part was removed?”
He stated he would patiently await an answer - but no member from the ruling party responded.
