Chennai, Sep 28 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu BJP has issued a call for urgent legal repercussions against actor and TVK leader Vijay, as well as the event organizers, following a tragic stampede at his campaign rally in Karur that resulted in over 39 fatalities and left more than 60 individuals injured.
BJP state spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad condemned the incident, labeling it a “human-made disaster stemming from severe negligence and failure in administration.”
He stated that the calamity was the result of “irresponsible crowd control and a blatant lack of concern for public safety” by both the rally organizers and the Tamil Nadu Police. The BJP noted that the rally attracted nearly 50,000 attendees, significantly exceeding the official limit of 10,000, leading to perilous overcrowding.
Prasad further criticized Vijay for “intentional delays and inadequate planning,” highlighting that the actor-politician arrived hours late, forcing thousands to endure the oppressive heat without water, shade, or medical assistance.
The party stated that this negligence resulted in widespread dehydration, oxygen deficiency, and panic, culminating in the deadly crush.
Prasad urged the Tamil Nadu government to take “swift, transparent, and impartial action” against all individuals accountable, including TVK leaders, while advocating for systemic reforms to ensure the safety of public gatherings.
“The pain endured by the victims and their loved ones cannot be dismissed as mere happenstance. This tragedy was entirely preventable,” the statement asserted.
He acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their immediate expressions of sympathy and for the Centre’s instruction to obtain a detailed report from the state.
Prasad called on the Central government to dispatch a ministerial team to Karur to offer condolences to the grieving families and supervise the investigation.
The BJP has also encouraged the public to show support by raising black flags and lighting lamps in memory of the victims, while urging anyone with information to cooperate with the inquiries.
The Tamil Nadu government has initiated a judicial inquiry led by retired High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan and announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased. However, the BJP insisted that “justice must transcend politics” and that accountability should be enforced at all levels to avert such tragedies in the future.
