Karnataka's Leader of Opposition and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader R. Ashoka on Saturday, 6 June launched a pointed attack on the state's Congress government, alleging that the prolonged Cabinet portfolio allocation dispute has left critical departments — including Agriculture and Education — without full-time ministers at a moment of pressing governance need.

Cabinet Deadlock Leaves Key Departments Headless

Ashoka alleged that the delay and confusion surrounding portfolio assignments had created an administrative vacuum across several departments. He claimed the standoff had effectively paralysed governance for several weeks, with internal Congress disagreements over power-sharing taking precedence over day-to-day administration.

Referring to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, the Leader of Opposition said the unfolding situation had revealed that the Congress government's focus was on 'political bargaining over departments' rather than delivering governance to the people of Karnataka.

Farmers Left Without Agriculture Minister Ahead of Monsoon Sowing

Ashoka stressed that farmers across Karnataka were actively preparing for the monsoon sowing season, yet the state currently lacks a full-time Agriculture Minister. He listed critical issues — seed availability, fertiliser supply, crop loans, crop insurance, and monsoon assessment — that he said were being neglected due to the ministerial vacancy.

The timing is particularly significant: the southwest monsoon typically reaches Karnataka in early June, making agricultural decisions in this window consequential for the state's farming communities.

Education Sector Under Strain as Academic Year Begins

The BJP leader also flagged the absence of an Education Minister even as the new academic year got under way. According to Ashoka, thousands of government schools require urgent structural repairs — leaking roofs and unsafe buildings ahead of the rains — while shortages of textbooks, uniforms, and teachers remain unaddressed. He added that sanitation facilities in many schools continue to fall short of required standards.

Bengaluru Development Portfolios Also Under Fire

Ashoka criticised the arrangement around Bengaluru's development portfolios, alleging that while a minister has been assigned to the city's development brief, key bodies such as the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) remain under the direct control of Chief Minister Shivakumar — rendering the designated minister largely ineffective, he claimed.

BJP's Political Charge and What Comes Next

Calling the entire Cabinet allocation exercise a 'political compromise' driven by competition over 'lucrative portfolios', Ashoka alleged that Congress leaders were prioritising departments that handle large-scale financial resources, contracts, and commissions over public welfare. He further alleged that the government's agenda was centred on 'power, resources, and opportunities for corruption' rather than development.

Ashoka expressed confidence that the people of Karnataka were closely watching the situation and would 'teach a lesson' to the Congress in future elections. The Congress government is yet to formally respond to these specific allegations. With the monsoon advancing and schools already open, pressure on the ruling party to complete its Cabinet reshuffle is likely to intensify in the coming days.
