Kolkata, Oct 5 (NationPress) Raju Bista, a two-time BJP Lok Sabha representative from Darjeeling constituency in West Bengal, has sent a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to declare the ongoing crisis in the hills, Terai, and Dooars regions, exacerbated by heavy rainfall and recurrent landslides, as a "state-level disaster".
"This appeal follows the significant rainfall on the nights of October 4 and 5, which resulted in widespread damage throughout the Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars areas," Bista stated.
In his correspondence, the BJP MP pointed out the alarming loss of lives, destruction of vital infrastructure, including roads and bridges, and the devastation of agricultural lands, homes, and livelihoods.
He also requested that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee communicate with the Union government regarding the extensive losses endured by the north Bengal region to secure additional resources for the affected areas.
"I have also voiced my concerns about the West Bengal government's inaction in declaring the Teesta Flood of 2023 a "disaster", which has left victims without necessary compensation and support," Bista remarked.
In his letter to the Chief Minister, he stressed the necessity for financial compensation for all victims and collaboration with the Union government for additional assistance.
"I remain hopeful that the Chief Minister will take immediate steps to provide all necessary relief and support to the victims, working together with the Central government to ensure the prompt reconstruction of infrastructure and rehabilitation of all affected individuals," Bista mentioned.
As per the latest reports, at least 20 individuals have tragically lost their lives, and many others have sustained injuries in the hills due to the relentless rains and landslides.
According to updates from the NDRF and district administration, fatalities have been reported from locations including Sarsaly, Jasbirgaon, Mirik Basti, Dhar Gaon (Mechi), Nagrakata, and the Mirik Lake area.
Expressing his sorrow over the loss of life, North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha commented to the media: "Currently, the death toll stands at 20 and may continue to rise."
