Kolkata, Oct 27 (NationPress) The Central government has enhanced the protective measures for BJP Lok Sabha member Khagen Murmu, representing the Malda (Uttar) constituency in Malda district of West Bengal. This decision follows a grave attack on him allegedly orchestrated by Trinamool Congress activists earlier this month in the northern part of the state.
Going forward, Murmu will receive "Y plus" category security from the Union government.
On October 7, Murmu's vehicle, along with that of BJP’s Chief Whip in the West Bengal Assembly, Shankar Ghosh, was purportedly assaulted by Trinamool Congress activists in Bamundanga, Jalpaiguri district, while they were transporting relief supplies for flood-affected individuals.
During this incident, Murmu sustained serious injuries, necessitating an extended hospital stay, while Ghosh suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized for a few days.
A member of the BJP state committee indicated that in response to the attack, a request was sent to the Union Home Ministry from the party's state unit to elevate Murmu's security.
According to the state committee member, the Union Home Ministry recognized the necessity for enhanced security for Murmu, leading to the decision to assign him 'Y+' security.
Previously, the security measures for the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, have been upgraded multiple times since 2020 due to perceived threats.
In 2024, Adhikari's security was bolstered twice — first in October, expanding his Z-category security to nationwide coverage, and again in December, with an increase in the CAPF personnel accompanying his convoy to at least 22 armed members, following intelligence on an elevated threat level.
