Kolkata, Oct 9 (NationPress) A petition was submitted to the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, requesting a National Investigation Agency (NIA) inquiry into the assault on BJP Lok Sabha member Khagen Murmu and the party's Chief Whip in the West Bengal Assembly, Shankar Ghosh.
The court has accepted the petition, and a hearing is anticipated next week.
On Monday afternoon, the vehicle carrying Murmu and Ghosh was reportedly attacked by Trinamool Congress activists at Bamundanga in Jalpaiguri district as they traveled to Nagrakata to deliver relief supplies to flood victims.
Murmu suffered significant injuries in the attack and is currently hospitalized in Siliguri, located in the Darjeeling district. Ghosh, who sustained minor injuries, was also hospitalized but was discharged on Wednesday afternoon.
In the petition filed at the Calcutta High Court, petitioner Anindya Sundar Ghosh expressed skepticism about the state police's investigation and emphasized the need for a comprehensive inquiry by a central investigative agency.
As of Thursday morning, four individuals have been detained in connection with the assault on Murmu and Ghosh, with two apprehended on Wednesday afternoon and the remaining two on Thursday morning.
Attempts were made by Trinamool Congress from the outset to portray the attack as a spontaneous public outcry against the BJP.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also supported her party’s narrative on Wednesday, asserting that the attack on BJP Lok Sabha member Khagen Murmu and Chief Whip Shankar Ghosh was driven by public anger towards the BJP for their lack of engagement with the community after being elected.
Meanwhile, Shankar Ghosh, who was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, stated that he intends to return with relief supplies to the same location where the attack occurred.
