Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Thursday, 6 August paid tribute to former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on her death anniversary, honouring her contributions to Indian diplomacy, parliamentary traditions, and public service. Swaraj, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, remains one of the most celebrated figures in post-independence Indian politics.

Chief Ministers Lead the Tributes

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described Swaraj as 'an eloquent orator, a sensitive leader of the people' who 'regarded service to the nation as a sacred duty, public welfare as a solemn resolve, and India's prestige as a responsibility.' He added that 'her life stands as a shining chapter of devotion to the nation, public service, and the dignity of noble democratic values.'

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recalled Swaraj's bond with the people of the capital, noting her 'warm smile, powerful oratory, and her nature of embracing the joys and sorrows of every individual as her own.' Gupta observed that for any Indian in distress abroad, 'a single message from her became a source of reassurance and confidence.'

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis posted his tribute on social media platform X, remembering her as 'a distinguished parliamentarian, former External Affairs Minister, and Padma Vibhushan' recipient on her 'SmrutiDin.'

Union Ministers Remember Her Diplomacy and Compassion

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who succeeded Swaraj in the portfolio, posted on X: 'Fondly remember Sushma Swaraj ji on her Punya Tithi today. Her grace, warmth and presence are deeply missed.'

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi said Swaraj 'combined strength with humility and dedicated every moment of her public life to the service of the nation,' calling her 'a leader of rare conviction and compassion.' He added that her contributions to Indian diplomacy and parliamentary traditions 'continue to be cherished with immense respect.'

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy paid special tribute to Swaraj's role in the formation of Telangana, where she is fondly remembered as 'Telangana Chinnamma'. Reddy said her 'invaluable contribution and steadfast support during the formation of the State of Telangana will always hold a special place in the hearts of its people.' He concluded: 'Her legacy of selfless service, humility and dedication to the nation will continue to inspire generations.'

Swaraj's Enduring Legacy

Sushma Swaraj served as External Affairs Minister from 2014 to 2019 and was widely praised for her use of social media to assist Indians stranded abroad — a practice that set a new benchmark for citizen-responsive diplomacy. She also served as Chief Minister of Delhi and held several other Union Cabinet portfolios across her long parliamentary career. She passed away on 6 August 2019.

As tributes poured in on her sixth death anniversary, leaders across the party underscored that her model of public service — accessible, empathetic, and nationally focused — remains a reference point for Indian political leadership.
