BJP meets NCW chief over JNU sexual harassment case against Congress MP Akoijam
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, met National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar in New Delhi and submitted a formal memorandum demanding action against Congress MP and sacked Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who faces sexual harassment allegations from 11 female students. The move intensifies political pressure on the Congress party, which has remained publicly silent on the matter.
What the BJP Delegation Said
BJP Mahila Morcha National President Roop Kumari Choudhary, speaking to reporters after the meeting, said a delegation of five MPs and Mahila Morcha office-bearers urged the NCW chairperson to take cognisance of the incident. 'Eleven female students had shown great courage by submitting written complaints alleging misconduct by him. The university's Internal Committee upheld the complaints following an enquiry. He has been dismissed from the university, but the Congress party and its leaders have not said a word about the matter,' Choudhary said.
She added that the delegation specifically cited concerns over student safety, noting that the accused reportedly retains significant political protection. 'Ideally, Congress should have removed him from the party and the post, keeping the safety of the students in mind. However, no step has been taken yet. That is why we sought the NCW's intervention,' she said.
FIR Filed, Akoijam Summoned for Questioning
Delhi Police registered an FIR on 11 October based on a complaint filed by JNU's Chief Security Officer. The case was registered at the Vasant Kunj North police station under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Professor Akoijam has been named in the FIR and issued a notice to appear for questioning on Thursday. Delhi Police have confirmed the matter is under investigation.
Nature of the Allegations
According to media reports, at least 11 female students lodged sexual harassment complaints against Professor Akoijam in May. The complaints alleged that he invited students to his campus residence under the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some students also alleged that he made obscene and inappropriate remarks in the classroom. JNU's Internal Committee examined the complaints and upheld them, leading to his dismissal from the university.
BJP's Earlier Meeting with President Murmu
A day prior, on Tuesday, a delegation of BJP women Parliamentarians met President Droupadi Murmu, drawing her attention to the charges against the Manipur MP and urging that he be deemed unfit to continue as a Parliamentarian. The delegation also requested that the President ensure the safety of the students who came forward with their complaints. The twin meetings — with the President and the NCW — signal a coordinated BJP campaign to keep the issue in the national spotlight and force the Congress to respond.
Congress Yet to Respond
As of Wednesday, neither the Indian National Congress nor its senior leadership had issued a public statement on the allegations or Professor Akoijam's dismissal. Critics argue the party's silence amounts to tacit protection of the accused. The development comes at a politically sensitive juncture, with opposition parties already under scrutiny on accountability issues. Whether the NCW takes formal cognisance and what action, if any, follows will be closely watched.
