New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) Following the resignation of Manipur’s Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Sunday, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari voiced his discontent regarding the delayed action, asserting that it was too late and the BJP will remain marked by this stain.
Tiwari remarked that opposition figures, especially Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, had persistently implored Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur and address the escalating crisis, but their requests went unheeded.
In an interview with IANS, Tiwari stated, "The ongoing horror in Manipur includes thousands of rapes, public violence, revenge-fueled mob attacks, burning homes, and millions fleeing for safety."
He underscored that as the nation’s leader, Prime Minister Modi had an obligation to intervene, engage with the populace, and act to avert further escalation of the ethnic conflict.
“However, your obstinacy allowed a thoroughly ineffective Chief Minister to remain in office, facilitating the massacre during his tenure,” he added. He concluded, "The BJP will forever carry this stain."
Earlier on Sunday, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh submitted his resignation to Governor A.K. Bhalla.
Nevertheless, the ethnic violence erupting between Meitis and Kuki-Zos that began in May 2023 has overshadowed his second term.
Tiwari also criticized the Prime Minister's choice to engage in foreign travel amid the ongoing turmoil. "While Manipur is engulfed in flames, and citizens nationwide are in distress, the Prime Minister is overseas," he commented.
Tiwari’s remarks underscored the disparity between governmental actions and the urgent circumstances in the state.
Regarding the Congress’ recent electoral performance, Tiwari refrained from public commentary but indicated that discussions would occur within the INDIA bloc.
"Why did we lose in Haryana by a mere 0.9 percent when there was no BJP government? Why did we compete in Goa and Gujarat, ultimately aiding the BJP? These are critical matters that require attention," Tiwari expressed.
He reaffirmed that the INDIA bloc remains cohesive, has achieved outcomes, and will persist in unity.
Tiwari also conveyed his concerns about the current situation at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, where severe traffic congestion, with some stretches reaching up to 300 kilometers, has caused significant discomfort for devotees.
“I do not wish to criticize anyone at this juncture, but I humbly request both the state and central governments to ensure the safety and well-being of those stranded at the Kumbh,” Tiwari stated.
He pointed out that numerous pilgrims have had to walk distances of 25 to 30 kilometers due to the extensive traffic jams.
