Mumbai, July 14 (NationPress) Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, who also oversees the Urban Development sector, announced on Monday during the state Assembly that directives will be issued to the Commissioner of BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to compile and classify instances of unauthorised constructions in Mumbai.
He emphasized that the government will not endorse any unauthorised constructions, warning that officials found to be complicit will face stringent repercussions.
Shinde's remarks came in response to numerous inquiries from both ruling and opposition parties concerning the surge in unauthorised constructions and the perceived inaction by the civic authority.
Assembly members including Parag Alvani, Yogesh Sagar, Jitendra Awhad, Dilip Walse Patil, Varun Sardesai, Murji Patel, Ajay Chaudhary, and Bala Nar demanded decisive measures against illegal constructions, suggesting a comprehensive action plan not only for Mumbai but across the entire state of Maharashtra.
Sagar highlighted the necessity for the government to act against ward officers and senior police inspectors in areas where unauthorised constructions have proliferated, as mandated by existing regulations.
Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar urged the government to generate a list of unauthorised constructions from different wards in Mumbai for subsequent action.
The DCM noted that while the Municipal Corporation has responded to several unauthorised constructions within Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, certain constructions have been put on hold due to court orders. Nonetheless, these will be dismantled once the courts issue directions. He mentioned that immediate action is currently unfeasible due to residents' occupancy during the monsoon, but plans for eviction will resume post-monsoon.
Shinde referenced a specific case where an illegal shed was erected on plot No. 256, owned by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in Vile Parle (East). The Municipal Corporation took action to demolish the structure on March 24, 2025, after receiving a complaint regarding unauthorized parking encroaching on the plot, which was subsequently addressed on June 3, 2025.
Minister of State Madhuri Misal confirmed that actions against unauthorised constructions are pursued in accordance with the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act. She encouraged members to report any instances of such constructions in their areas for prompt action.
