Kolkata, Dec 1 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) has apprehended two individuals involved in smuggling and confiscated 20 gold biscuits valued at over Rs 3.02 crore along the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in the North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal, as reported by an official on Monday.
"The operation occurred at the Ghojadanga checkpost where personnel from the 102 Bn BSF of the South Bengal Frontier are stationed. The smugglers attempted to hide the gold within the truck's cabin. The total weight of the seized gold biscuits is 2,332.845 grams with an estimated value of Rs 3,02,10,343," stated a senior BSF official.
"This incident unfolded at approximately 4 p.m. on Sunday. Armed with prior intelligence regarding an impending gold smuggling attempt from Bangladesh, our troops were on high alert.
Upon the truck's arrival at the checkpost, it underwent a thorough inspection. A cleverly concealed packet was discovered in the cabin, which contained the gold biscuits. Subsequently, the items were transported to the Ghojadanga Border Outpost along with the two smugglers and the truck," he continued.
During interrogation, the smugglers revealed they are local residents of North 24-Parganas, working as laborers and drivers in a brick kiln. They claimed the gold was entrusted to them by an unidentified person.
They were supposed to hand it over to another individual after passing through the Ghojadanga checkpost, in return for a financial reward. The seized gold and the truck, along with the smugglers, have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for further legal action.
The official commended the troopers for their vigilance, asserting that the BSF is highly capable of thwarting illegal operations such as smuggling, and the personnel continue to display their unwavering dedication.
"I urge the residents of border regions to promptly report any information regarding gold smuggling by sending a message or voice note to the BSF's Seema Sathi helpline number 14419 or WhatsApp number 9903472227. A reward will be offered for credible information, and the informant's identity will be kept strictly confidential," he added.
