Kolkata, Feb 7 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) has announced the successful apprehension of seven Bangladeshi nationals and three Indian touts in a carefully orchestrated operation across West Bengal's Nadia and Murshidabad districts.
The captured Bangladeshis, identified as illegal immigrants, were reportedly attempting to escape through the international border amidst intensified efforts across the nation to locate and detain foreigners residing unlawfully in India.
"This operation marks a significant achievement. Personnel from the 146 Bn BSF acted on credible intelligence regarding movements across the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB), which has been on heightened alert due to the prevailing circumstances in the neighboring nation," stated N.K. Pandey, DIG and spokesperson for the South Bengal Frontier of the BSF.
The operation commenced at approximately 5 a.m. on Thursday when a patrol team from the Jalangi Border Outpost identified a group of 6-7 individuals attempting to breach the IBB.
Although swift action was taken, only two individuals were detained as the others capitalized on the thick fog to retreat back into Indian territory. An immediate search operation was initiated, but only three bags were recovered without any trace of the remaining individuals.
"Upon interrogation, the two apprehended individuals admitted to being Bangladeshi nationals trying to escape India with the assistance of a tout from Madhubana village on the Indian side of the IBB. They mentioned five more Bangladeshis in their group. During this process, one of their mobile phones began ringing.
"He was instructed to answer the call casually. This call was from the tout facilitating their illegal crossing. The Bangladeshi was told to inform the tout that they had successfully escaped and were hiding near the customs office in Jalangi. The tout arrived at the designated spot and was arrested by BSF personnel present there. A motorcycle and a mobile phone were confiscated," added the DIG.
During further questioning, the tout disclosed that the other Bangladeshis were concealed in a dense banana grove near Gopalpur Ghat. BSF forces, disguised as civilians, proceeded to the location in an auto-rickshaw and an ambulance.
The tout was instructed to call the five illegal immigrants, assuring them there was no danger.
The Bangladeshis emerged from their hiding places and were detained around 9 a.m.
"Further interrogation revealed that two additional Indian touts were complicit in these cross-border operations, charging Rs 7,000 per individual. The arrested tout was instructed to call the other two and inform them that all seven Bangladeshis were safe and prepared to cross the IBB.
"He also notified them that they were willing to pay Rs 7,000 each. The touts consented to meet at Chichinia More. BSF personnel, disguised as illegal immigrants, proceeded to the location and apprehended the two. One attempted to assault a BSF officer with a sharp weapon but was quickly subdued," Pandey elaborated.
In addition to the motorcycle, 16 mobile phones and various currencies from India, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Indonesia were confiscated from the suspects.
The DIG asserted that this successful operation has significantly disrupted the network of infiltrators and touts operating along the IBB.
