Agartala, March 1 (NationPress) The remains of the Bangladeshi smuggler, fatally injured during a confrontation with the Border Security Force (BSF) in Tripura’s Sepahijala District on Friday, were handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Saturday, according to officials.
A spokesperson for the BSF reported that the body of Mohammad Alamin, aged 25, was transferred to the BGB via Kamthana village in Sepahijala District, located along the India-Bangladesh border. Prior to the handover, a post-mortem examination was conducted at a Tripura government hospital in Bishalgarh, he added. The spokesperson noted that a group of 20 to 25 Bangladeshi smugglers and criminals had crossed into Indian territory near the Border Outpost (BOP) at Putia in western Tripura’s Sepahijala District to engage in smuggling activities in conjunction with their Indian associates.
“When approached by the BSF patrol, the Bangladeshi smugglers and miscreants launched an attack on the Indian border personnel, seriously injuring a BSF soldier,” he stated. The Bangladeshi smugglers continued their assault with sharp objects and stones, even attempting to seize a BSF member’s service weapon, the spokesperson reported, adding that in self-defense, the soldier discharged a round from a non-lethal PAG (Pump Action Gun).
The injured Bangladeshi smuggler was taken to a government hospital in Bishalgarh, where he later died from his injuries on Friday night. The injured BSF soldier is also receiving treatment at the hospital.
In a related note, a BSF spokesperson indicated that the border security force is engaged in continuous efforts to combat cross-border smuggling along the India-Bangladesh border. Following specific intelligence, a collaborative operation with the Customs Department was executed in the Ranibazar area under the jurisdiction of the Sabroom Police Station in South Tripura, resulting in the seizure of over 100 kg of dry ganja (Cannabis) hidden in two vehicles. The BSF also apprehended three suspected drug traffickers, residents of Sepahijala District.
In separate operations across the state, BSF personnel seized various illegal items valued at approximately Rs 57 lakh. This operation highlights the BSF’s steadfast commitment to protecting India’s borders and thwarting transnational crimes. The force is dedicated to dismantling narcotics networks and fostering a drug-free Tripura.
Additionally, the BSF detained 15 Bangladeshi nationals, including three women and seven children, in Tripura on Friday for illegally entering India. The BSF also arrested three Indian facilitators who helped the Bangladeshis enter the country without legal documentation or passports.
