Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Barabanki (Uttar Pradesh), Sep 6 (NationPress) Just days following the police's cane charge on ABVP students, the administration executed a demolition operation at Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University located in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district on Saturday.
Officials dismantled parts of what they described as illegal constructions on the university's premises.
This initiative was spearheaded by Nawabganj SDM, supported by tehsil officials, revenue department personnel, and a substantial police presence, including officers from Nagar Kotwali.
According to revenue officials, the demolition was sanctioned after measurements of the land and document verifications revealed signs of encroachment. Consequently, the area was cleared and demolished.
During this operation, the entire campus was heavily secured, resembling a military encampment, with two bulldozers being utilized for the task.
"Our team performed a thorough survey uncovering illegal constructions. This action is a direct result of that survey, and additional information will follow," stated Barabanki ADM Arun Singh.
This demolition follows protests earlier this week, where students of Shri Ramswaroop University, alongside Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members, rallied against the administration for allegedly running LLB courses without proper accreditation.
Students asserted that the university was admitting students into the LLB program even after its recognition had been revoked. They further claimed the law course lacked affiliation with the Bar Council of India (BCI).
During these protests, clashes erupted between ABVP workers and police, resulting in a lathi charge by the police that left over 25 individuals injured.
The administration, however, dismissed the protesters as “outsiders”.
This incident sparked significant public outrage. In response, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mandated strict measures against police personnel involved in misconduct and instructed the Divisional Commissioner and IG of Ayodhya Range to conduct a comprehensive investigation. Circle Officer (CO) Harshit Chauhan was subsequently dismissed from his position.
The IG has been specifically assigned to scrutinize the police's actions during the cane charge.
