Burhanpur, April 3 (NationPress) The district of Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh is establishing a fresh identity, buoyed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship initiative, One District, One Product (ODOP). This has led to recognition for its banana and turmeric production, significantly contributing to the area's economic development.
Recently, the ‘Banana-Turmeric Festival’ was held in Burhanpur, showcasing the district’s agricultural capabilities. Following this event, Burhanpur’s turmeric gained international acknowledgment at an exhibition in Moscow, Russia, where it was lab-tested and commended for its superior quality. This acclaim has spurred an uptick in turmeric farming in the area.
As per the Horticulture Department of Burhanpur, approximately 1,680 farmers are involved in turmeric cultivation, aided by 32 turmeric processing units established throughout the district. This initiative has not only enhanced agricultural output but also fostered self-employment opportunities.
District Horticulture Officer Raju Badwaya informed IANS: “An international expo took place in Moscow from January 23 to February 9, where we exhibited our banana and turmeric products. The feedback was tremendous, leading to the export of around 10 quintals of powdered bananas to Moscow in March. We are currently in discussions to export raw bananas through Iran soon. Farmers are directly reaping the benefits of central government schemes under the ODOP initiative.”
Badwaya also pointed out the positive effects of the Pradhan Mantri Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme, which aims to enhance food processing and entrepreneurship.
“Approximately 300 blocks have been approved in the district under this scheme, with 200 already operational. Farmers, entrepreneurs, and job seekers are discovering new avenues through this initiative,” he added.
Sandeep Rawli, a young entrepreneur, recounted his success: “I completed my education up to the 12th grade but faced challenges in finding a job. Thanks to the PMFME scheme, I obtained a loan of Rs 25 lakh, with a subsidy of Rs 9 lakh. This assistance has enabled me to launch my own business. I am immensely grateful to PM Modi for this support.”
Entrepreneurs like Sandeep are not only crafting self-employment opportunities but are also creating jobs for the local populace. Women employed in these enterprises expressed their appreciation, noting that previous government initiatives have greatly improved their financial circumstances. They commended the Prime Minister for his vision and backing.
The One District, One Product (ODOP) initiative seeks to encourage balanced regional development throughout India. It aims to identify, brand, and promote at least one unique product from each district, facilitating comprehensive socio-economic progress. To date, 1,102 products from 761 districts have been identified under this initiative.
The selection of products for ODOP is grounded in the existing ecosystem of each district, including those recognized as export hubs and those bearing GI (Geographical Indication) tags. This strategic method is aiding districts like Burhanpur in flourishing, spotlighting India’s diverse agricultural and entrepreneurial potential on an international level.
