Kolkata, Sep 10 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court has instructed Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma to designate a Deputy Commissioner-level officer to probe the alleged police assault on the mother of the RG Kar victim during the Nabanna Abhijan.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh noted that the medical report from a private hospital indicated injury marks on the mother's forehead.
Labeling the case as “sensitive” and vital for “justice”, the judge mandated the investigating officer to review the medical treatment report from the private facility where the RG Kar victim's mother was admitted after the alleged incident on August 9.
He stated, “If required, he (the investigator) will file an FIR. He will also evaluate if any criminal offense occurred during this event. If no offense is established, the case will be closed with the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s approval,” said Justice Ghosh.
Expressing concern over the findings from the New Market and Shakespeare Police Stations, Justice Ghosh added, “Further investigation is necessary,” and instructed the Kolkata Police Commissioner accordingly.
This direction followed a case alleging police brutality against the mother of the RG Kar victim during protests.
Last month, the Calcutta High Court had requested the medical report from the private hospital where the RG Kar victim's mother was treated after the alleged police assault on August 9.
The first anniversary of the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 was overshadowed by violence stemming from clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators at the Nabanna Abhijan.
The victim's mother claimed she was assaulted by police while attempting to lead a march towards Nabanna with her husband and other protesters.
Subsequent to the incident, the RG Kar victim's father approached the Kolkata Police Commissioner, alleging that the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station failed to register his complaint.
On August 12, Kolkata Police announced that no evidence was found to support claims of police violence against the RG Kar victim's mother during the Nabanna Avijan on August 9.
