Kolkata, Dec 1 (NationPress) The single-judge bench of Justice Amrita Sinha at the Calcutta High Court posed a significant question on Monday about the eligibility of teachers with experience solely in the secondary section to receive an additional 10-mark weightage when being selected as higher secondary educators.
A petition brought to the court highlighted serious irregularities in the recent hiring process for higher secondary teachers in West Bengal's state-run schools. During the hearing, Justice Sinha raised concerns regarding the applicability of the experience weightage criteria.
This recruitment is aimed at filling positions in state-run schools after a Supreme Court ruling in April nullified the entire 2016 panel of approximately 26,000 school jobs by the WBSSC. The court ordered that only 'untainted' teachers could participate in the 2025 recruitment, while 'tainted' teachers, identified as those who secured jobs through corrupt means, were barred from applying.
In September, the WBSSC held written examinations for the recruitment of secondary and higher secondary teachers, and the results were recently announced.
However, concerns were raised when lists of candidates eligible for interviews in the higher secondary recruitment process included certain 'tainted' teachers from the 2016 panel.
The petitioner argued that this situation contradicts the Supreme Court's directive, which prohibits 'tainted' teachers from entering the new recruitment cycle.
During the session, Justice Sinha questioned the rationale behind allowing teachers with experience limited to the secondary level to assert the experience weightage for higher secondary positions. She also asked how those with only primary or upper-primary experience could qualify for secondary and higher secondary roles.
