Kolkata, April 3 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court on Thursday sought the Central government's position regarding the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel in Mothabari, located in the Malda district of West Bengal, which has recently experienced communal unrest due to alleged assaults on members of a specific community.
Previously, on March 28, the Calcutta High Court requested an action taken report from the state administration and instructed the Malda district magistrate and the district police superintendent to provide reports to the court detailing the causes of the tensions in Mothabari.
On Thursday, the state government presented the action taken report to the court. The counsel for the Union government indicated that there were no objections to deploying CAPF personnel in Mothabari to maintain order.
Following this, the Calcutta High Court ordered the Union government to file an affidavit regarding the situation.
Recently, BJP leader in West Bengal and counsel at the Calcutta High Court, Kaustav Bagchi, submitted a petition requesting the deployment of CAPF in Mothabari, prompting the division bench to direct the state government to present the action taken report.
Additionally, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, had earlier written to Governor C.V. Ananda Bose urging him to instruct the state government to deploy CAPF personnel in Mothabari following extensive attacks on Hindus in the area.
Adhikari has accused the West Bengal government and the ruling Trinamool Congress of orchestrating a plan for a “Greater Bangladesh” through appeasement politics.
He further claimed to the media that the perpetrators in Mothabari operated unchecked, looting, assaulting, and vandalizing without restraint.
“Their targets were Hindus. Therefore, I believe that the deployment of CAPF is the only viable solution to manage the situation, as the local police have failed to curb the vandalism and violence. The state police acted like ‘helpless puppets,’ merely pleading with the assailants. The miscreants controlled the main roads and vandalized numerous vehicles with impunity,” he stated.
