New Delhi, July 5 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended Sanjeev Saxena, an Assistant Divisional Engineer (ADE) of Northern RailwaysChandausi, located in the Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, as reported by the investigative agency on Saturday.
Additionally, the CBI detained Akash, a Trackman and subordinate of the Divisional Engineer, for purportedly soliciting and receiving a bribe of Rs 34,000 from a contractor working with the railways.
As per CBI officials, a complaint by the contractor led to a case being registered on July 4.
The contractor, who operates a private business involved in railway infrastructure projects, claimed that the ADE demanded a 2 percent commission—equivalent to Rs 34,000—to expedite the clearance of pending bills totaling Rs 17,57,605 related to a railway track fitting contract awarded on January 19 of the previous year.
Upon receiving the complaint, the CBI conducted a sting operation and apprehended both the Assistant Divisional Engineer and the Trackman on the night of July 4 as they allegedly accepted the bribe from the contractor.
Following detailed interrogations, both suspects were arrested early on July 5 and are expected to be presented before the Special Judge at the CBI Court in Ghaziabad later that day.
The CBI has indicated that the investigation is ongoing to identify any additional officials who may be part of this bribery scheme or if similar extortion attempts were made towards other contractors.
In a related incident earlier in April, the CBI arrested two senior officials from Northern Railway for allegedly accepting Rs 7 lakh in bribes in exchange for approving bills for a private firm.
Further investigation is still in progress.
