Angamaly (Kerala), Sep 2 (NationPress) The Coconut Development Board (CDB) marked World Coconut Day on Tuesday with the unveiling of newly revised schemes and the awarding of export excellence honors, reaffirming its commitment to fortifying the coconut sector.
In his inaugural address, MP and CDB Member M.K. Raghavan emphasized the necessity for a stronger emphasis on processing and product diversification within the coconut industry.
He pointed out the government's expanded financial backing through CDB initiatives and encouraged farmers to take advantage of these opportunities to enhance both production and productivity.
Highlighting that Kerala, once a frontrunner in coconut cultivation and yield, has fallen behind, he urged farmers to unite in efforts to restore the state's former prestige.
CDB CEO D. Prabhat Kumar, during his introductory remarks, underscored the significance of sustainable and profitable coconut farming.
He announced substantial revisions to subsidies, including an increase in the Area Expansion Programme from Rs 6,500 to Rs 56,000 per hectare and enhanced seedling production support from Rs 8 to Rs 45.
He stated that integrated efforts in production, processing, marketing, and exports are essential for the long-term growth of the sector.
CDB Chairman Suba Nagarajan mentioned that the Board received increased budgetary support for the integrated development of cultivation and industry.
He highlighted the Board's commitment to establishing a climate-resilient coconut economy through revised schemes, value addition, and skill development, aiming to secure sustainable livelihoods for millions of farmers and workers.
The Export Excellence Awards recognized exceptional contributors in the industry. United Carbon Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Tirupur, claimed gold for the Best Coconut Shell-Based Product Exporter, with Nova Carbons India Pvt. Ltd., Tirunelveli (silver), and Jacobi Carbons India Pvt. Ltd., Coimbatore (bronze). In the kernel-based category, Marico Ltd., Mumbai, took gold, while Mezhukkattil Mills, Aluva, and Fair Exports India Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, won silver and bronze, respectively. Sakthi Coco Products, Pollachi, received gold for coconut water-based exports.
Special awards were given to Carbure Activated Carbon Pvt. Ltd., Coimbatore (Best Women Exporter) and Global Coconut Farmers Producer Company Ltd., Tirupur (Best FPO Exporter).
Publications detailing improved cultivation technologies and revised schemes were introduced, followed by a technical session on processing, value addition, and exports. Nearly 2,000 participants, including farmers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers, attended the celebrations.
