Stockholm, June 9 (NationPress) The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, Gyanesh Kumar, is on a visit to Sweden and will be the keynote speaker at the inaugural session of the International IDEA Stockholm Conference on Electoral Integrity, commencing on June 10.

This conference, running from June 10-12, gathers heads of Election Management Bodies (EMBs), policymakers, and institutional leaders to discuss critical issues surrounding electoral integrity, such as disinformation, digital disruptions, election security, climate risks, and the increasing influence of Artificial Intelligence in elections.

Prior to the conference, CEC Gyanesh Kumar engaged warmly with the Indian diaspora in Sweden, reinforcing the Election Commission of India’s commitment to fostering inclusive electoral participation and civic engagement among Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs).

He emphasized significant initiatives like the Online Voter Registration System and the Electronic Transmission of Postal Ballot Management System (ETPBMS), which aim to enhance the participation of overseas voters.

During his keynote address, CEC Kumar will showcase India’s global leadership in election management, particularly highlighting the scale and complexity of its electoral processes, which are regarded as exemplary among democracies worldwide.

His speech is anticipated to attract interest from EMBs globally, with over 100 participants from approximately 50 countries attending the conference.

This event is collaboratively organized by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Election Authority, and the Australian Electoral Commission.

CEC Kumar will also engage in high-level discussions with key international figures, starting with a meeting with Kevin Casas-Zamora, Secretary-General of International IDEA, followed by bilateral meetings with Chief Election Commissioners and heads of electoral bodies from more than 20 countries, including the UK, Netherlands, France, South Africa, Indonesia, Mexico, Mongolia, and Switzerland.

Additionally, he is scheduled to meet with senior electoral officials like Leena Rikkila Tamang, Director (Asia-Pacific) at International IDEA; Dr. Elsie T. Nghikembua, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia; and Abdool Rahman Mohammad Irfan, Electoral Commissioner of Mauritius.

As the world’s largest democracy, India has consistently nurtured a fruitful partnership with International IDEA, sharing institutional innovations and best practices. Through various capacity-building programs and global forums, the India International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Management (IIIDEM) is establishing itself as a center of excellence in electoral training and collaboration.
