New Delhi, July 8 (NationPress) In a magnificent tribute to spiritual heritage and global harmony, the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), operating under the Ministry of Culture, is set to honor Ashaḍha Purṇima, also referred to as Dhammacakkappavattana Divas, at the esteemed Mulagandha Kuti Vihara in Sarnath on July 10.

This sacred occasion commemorates the pivotal moment when Lord Buddha delivered his inaugural sermon, initiating the Wheel of Dhamma, at the Deer Park in Sarnath, historically known as Risipatana Mrigadaya.

The address to his five ascetic companions introduced the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, which are fundamental tenets of Buddhism. The event, hosted by the IBC in partnership with the Mahabodhi Society of India and endorsed by the Ministry of Culture, will commence at 4:00 PM with a revered Parikrama and chanting ceremony at the historic Dhamek Stupa.

Distinguished monks from various traditions will lead the chants, invoking the spiritual essence of this sacred location. The ceremony will also include 'Mangalacharan' (auspicious invocations) and enlightening discourses by spiritual leaders, scholars, and dignitaries. Ashadha Purnima also heralds the beginning of Varsha Vassa—the monastic rainy retreat observed by Buddhist monks and nuns globally.

In nations such as Sri Lanka and Thailand, this day is recognized as Esala Poya and Asanha Bucha, respectively. In India, it is similarly celebrated as Guru Purnima, a day dedicated to honoring spiritual teachers across both Buddhist and Hindu traditions.

Established in 2012, the IBC is the largest Buddhist confederation worldwide, uniting over 320 organizations from 39 countries.

Based in New Delhi, it aims to cultivate unity, compassion, and shared wisdom across diverse traditions and cultures. The observance at Sarnath—where the Buddha’s voice first resonated—will serve as a powerful reaffirmation of India’s spiritual heritage and its continuous contribution to propagating the Dhamma globally.
