Guwahati, May 19 (NationPress) Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced on Monday that the Central Government is actively pursuing the enhancement of a robust waterway infrastructure across the entire Northeast.
Sonowal stated, “In line with the vision set forth by our esteemed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are advancing the development of a resilient waterway infrastructure in Assam and the Northeast, with projects valued at Rs 1,000 crore planned for completion by 2026.”
He noted that over the past two years, an investment exceeding Rs 1,000 crore has already been made, with Rs 300 crore in projects successfully completed.
“After reviewing the ongoing initiatives in the region, we are on track to finish the remaining Rs 700 crore projects by the end of 2025. These initiatives are designed to enhance cargo and passenger movement, improve last-mile connectivity, stimulate economic progress in the Northeast, and align with the comprehensive vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat through sustainable and inclusive transportation solutions.”
Sonowal emphasized that India is progressively approaching the objective of a ‘Viksit Bharat’, highlighting that Assam and the Northeast are pivotal to this advancement, with inland waterways being essential.
“Since 2014, the Modi administration has revitalized this previously overlooked transportation mode, particularly through the Brahmaputra (NW2) and Barak (NW16) rivers. Programs like Jalvahak are motivating businesses to embrace this economical, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation approach, alleviating strain on road and rail networks, and positioning Assam as a crucial player in India’s path to self-reliance by 2047.
Reviewing various projects—from new infrastructure developments aimed at enhancing capacity on national waterways to initiatives for skill development among the youth of Assam and the Northeast in the maritime sector—Sonowal underscored the urgency for optimal fund utilization.
He added, “Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is forging new pathways for the youth of Assam and the Northeast to engage in India’s maritime expansion.”
Additionally, through institutions such as the Maritime Skill Development Centre in Guwahati and the Centre of Excellence for Inland Water Transport in Dibrugarh, we are equipping a future-ready workforce for both inland and global maritime opportunities.
“These endeavors form part of a broader initiative to skill, empower, and employ our youth in logistics, cargo handling, vessel operations, and more—particularly as we enhance infrastructure on NW2 and NW16. The Northeast stands not only as a gateway to Southeast Asia but as a significant contributor to India’s aspiration of becoming a global maritime leader and achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047.
To further promote cruise tourism and augment cargo handling capabilities across National Waterways 2 (Brahmaputra) and 16 (Barak), over Rs 1,500 crores have been allocated for significant projects expected to be completed by 2027-28.
These projects include the construction of modern jetties outfitted with onshore facilities at Silghat, Bishwanath Ghat, Neamati Ghat, and Guijan.
Moreover, a new building for the Regional Office of the Mercantile Marine Department (MSDC), along with a guest house and office space for ITAT, will be established at Fancy Bazar in Guwahati.
