Dehradun, April 29 (NationPress) As the holy gates of Gangotri and Yamunotri prepare to open on Wednesday, the much-anticipated annual Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is set to begin.
A vital element for the local economy, this pilgrimage not only enhances the hospitality and transportation sectors but also provides jobs for numerous mule operators who navigate the challenging paths to the shrines.
Official statistics reveal that this year, more than 8,000 mules and horses are registered for service along the Kedarnath and Yamunotri routes. These animals are essential for aiding pilgrims, particularly the elderly and those with physical limitations, in traversing the demanding mountain trails.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasized the necessity of using only healthy and fit animals for the yatra. He has instructed the Animal Husbandry Department to perform health assessments on the ponies and horses both before their deployment and during the journey.
“The government is dedicated to ensuring that the Char Dham Yatra is a safe, smooth, and comfortable adventure for all pilgrims. From road and helicopter transport to animal-based support, every possible measure is being implemented to assist the devotees,” stated CM Dhami.

The Animal Husbandry Department has issued fitness certificates for all animals following thorough health evaluations. Veterinary hospitals have been established at Sonprayag, Gauri Kund, Lincholi, and Kedarnath, staffed with five veterinarians and seven para-veterinary personnel.
Additionally, 13 hot water stations have been set up along the trekking path to ensure the well-being of the animals.
In Yamunotri, more than 3,700 animals have been registered. A temporary veterinary hospital has been established in Janki Chatti, which serves as the base for the Yamunotri trek. This facility is staffed by four veterinary doctors, four livestock extension officers, and two animal husbandry assistants. Six geysers have been installed along the path to provide warm water for the animals.
To regulate the influx of pilgrims and maintain transparency, prepaid booking counters have been established at five locations along the Kedarnath route: Sonprayag, Gauri Kund, Bheembali, Lincholi, and Rudra Point. A similar prepaid booking counter is available in Janki Chatti for those heading to Yamunotri, organized by the district panchayat.
Mule operators on the Yamunotri route will be provided with numbered jackets for easy identification. Furthermore, each animal is permitted only one round trip daily to avoid exhaustion.
