Greater Chennai Corporation Mayor R. Priya made a notable public appearance on Thursday, 16 July, attending the inauguration of a new Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) at Kolathur — a Union government function — even as her conspicuous absence from multiple state government programmes organised by the ruling Thozhilalar Katchchi (TVK)-led Tamil Nadu government continues to fuel political speculation.

The new passport service centre, established at the Kolathur Post Office in North Chennai, was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan. The facility is part of the Centre's initiative to expand citizen services through the national postal network, making passport-related services more accessible to residents of the area.

Addressing the gathering, Murugan said the Union government was focused on delivering public services to citizens at the grassroots level. He noted that post offices had evolved well beyond their traditional role, now functioning as integrated service hubs offering banking, insurance, Aadhaar enrolment, and other citizen-centric services under a single roof.

Key Announcements at the Event

Murugan highlighted the Centre's Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, crediting it with eliminating intermediaries and ensuring greater transparency in the delivery of financial assistance. He also stated that more than 58 crore Jan Dhan accounts had been opened across the country over the past 12 years, significantly expanding financial inclusion.

The Minister added that India had emerged as a global leader in digital and cashless transactions, and that the repeal of more than 1,500 obsolete laws had simplified governance and improved ease of living. As part of the ceremony, Murugan handed over the first passport issued by the new POPSK to the parents of a six-month-old infant.

Others present at the event included North Chennai MP Kalanidhi Veeraswamy, Kolathur MLA V.S. Babu, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs Isha Srivastava, Chief Postmaster General Mariamma Thomas, and Regional Passport Officer R. Vijayakumar.
