Thiruvananthapuram, March 1 (NationPress) With increasing worries regarding the rising participation of teenagers and young adults in criminal acts in Kerala, the role of cinema has once more surfaced as a contentious issue.
This conversation was ignited by Union Minister of State for Tourism and Kerala’s sole BJP Lok Sabha MP, actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi. On Saturday, Gopi recognized that while cinema might influence society, the onus of responsibility lies with everyone.
“Although films can have an impact, it is vital for society as a whole to guide the younger generation. No one should be misled,” he emphasized.
His comments followed a disturbing incident where a 15-year-old class 10 student from Kozhikode, Shahabas, tragically succumbed to severe head injuries after being assaulted by classmates during a farewell party. Five students have been charged with his murder.
Earlier this week, another shocking crime rattled the state when 23-year-old Affan brutally killed his 22-year-old girlfriend and four close family members, including his younger brother, using a hammer. His mother, who was also attacked, is currently hospitalized but is no longer in critical condition.
Veteran actor and comedian Jagadish, who has featured in over 400 films during his 41-year career, contributed to this debate. As a teacher, Jagadish spoke to IANS and highlighted the necessity of instilling proper values in students.
“While cinema mirrors society, it’s unjust to solely blame films for negative influences. There are numerous movies that depict love, resilience, and historical icons like Gandhiji. Why does cinema face criticism only when adverse events occur?” he questioned.
Filmmaker Aashiq Abu shared similar views, acknowledging that while films indeed affect society, responsible storytelling is essential.
“Cinema, like any other medium, shapes society. It's crucial to exercise caution when illustrating violence,” he remarked.
As the discussion persists, the larger question endures — Is cinema entirely accountable for societal problems, or is it simply a reflection of our reality?
