Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Imphal, Feb 5 (NationPress) At least five individuals sustained injuries on Thursday evening when a crowd clashed with security forces in the Kuki-Zo tribal-majority district of Churachandpur, Manipur, during demonstrations against local MLAs from this community joining the BJP-led government, officials reported.
A police representative in Imphal stated that mostly youthful protesters assembled at Tuibong Bazaar, setting fire to piles of discarded items and tyres while chanting slogans against Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, a BJP MLA from the Kuki-Zo community.
The situation intensified when security forces attempted to disperse the protesters. The crowd initially outnumbered law enforcement and started heavy stone-pelting, prompting the authorities to implement a baton charge to restore order.
In response to the unrest, additional security personnel were dispatched to the affected areas to prevent further disturbances. Reports indicate that at least five protesters suffered minor injuries during the altercation, according to the police.
The tension remains high, with senior security officials deployed to the region to oversee the restoration of calm. Tensions have been brewing in Churachandpur district since Wednesday evening, following Kipgen's oath-taking as Deputy Chief Minister from Manipur Bhavan in New Delhi.
Several Kuki-Zo organizations have called for a shutdown in Churachandpur on Friday and announced intentions to organize demonstrations in Kuki-Zo tribal areas of other districts.
Meanwhile, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), the leading body of the Kuki-Zo tribal community, declared a social boycott of all Kuki-Zo MLAs involved in the formation of the Manipur government on Thursday.
Out of the ten Kuki-Zo MLAs, three—Nemcha Kipgen, L.M. Khaute, and Ngursanglur Sanate—have participated in the government formation process. Seven of the ten Kuki-Zo MLAs, including Kipgen, Khaute, and Sanate, are affiliated with the BJP, while the remaining three are linked with local Kuki-Zo organizations.
