Imphal, April 9 (NationPress) Manipur's Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh reiterated on Thursday that the state administration is unwavering in its pledge to uphold peace and stability amidst escalating tensions following a devastating blast earlier this week.
Leading a crucial security review meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted that robust and decisive actions are being implemented to avert and address any threats to public order.
This is the third security meeting convened since the tragic event on April 7, when a powerful bomb—suspected to have been detonated by Kuki militants—exploded at a residence in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai village, situated in Bishnupur district.
The explosion tragically took the lives of a five-year-old boy and his five-month-old sister, who were reportedly asleep during the incident. Their mother was injured in the blast, which also severely damaged the house.
Following the meeting, the Chief Minister shared on Facebook: “We conducted a thorough examination of the existing concerns, assessed the measures currently in place, and strengthened our coordinated efforts for effective ground-level implementation.”
Reiterating the government's commitment, he stated: “The Government is resolutely dedicated to maintaining peace and stability. We are taking strong and decisive measures to thwart any threats to public order.”
He urged all citizens to maintain calm and collaborate with authorities, saying: “Together, with shared responsibility and vigilance, we will restore normalcy and ensure a secure and peaceful Manipur.”
The high-level meeting included Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Chief Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, and Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, alongside senior officials from various security agencies and the Manipur Police.
Concurrently, multiple organizations convened with the Chief Minister and submitted memoranda detailing their concerns, which were thoroughly discussed.
In a post on social media platform X, CM Singh remarked: “The Tronglaobi incident and subsequent unrest represent a grave breach of peace. The Government is enacting firm, time-sensitive measures, in line with constitutional provisions, to restore normalcy and ensure security. We remain committed to public engagement and decisive action to uphold the rule of law and protect the interests of all.”
In another message, he noted close coordination with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, stating: “The Tronglaobi incident is profoundly regrettable and has disrupted ongoing peace initiatives. Strict action will be taken against those accountable. The government is steadfast in its commitment to restoring peace, ensuring security, and upholding the rule of law.”
Meanwhile, public outrage over the incident erupted on the streets, with a significant number of individuals, including women, participating in a protest rally in Imphal on Thursday.
The demonstration was organized under the banner of several groups, including the All Manipur United Club Organisation (AMUCO), All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Porei Lemarol Apunba Meira Paibi, Committee on Human Rights (COHR), and the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF).
Despite curfew orders imposed by district authorities, the rally began from Kwakeithel around noon and advanced along Tiddim Road. It was ultimately halted by a substantial presence of security forces, including State Police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF), at Hodam Leirak.
A brief confrontation ensued before authorities allowed a small delegation from the five organizations to meet with the Chief Minister. The protesting groups accused central forces of bias favoring Kuki armed factions and called for the withdrawal of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreements with these militant groups.
In the midst of the tense atmosphere, police also intervened to prevent a 32-year-old man from attempting self-immolation in front of Lok Bhavan in Imphal on Thursday afternoon. The individual, identified as Sinam Appolo from Mayang Langjing, reportedly took this drastic action out of despair over the deaths of the two children in the April 7 blast.
Authorities acted swiftly to prevent further escalation as tensions continue to remain high throughout the state.
