Key Takeaways
Imphal, April 8 (NationPress) Following a tragic bomb blast in Bishnupur district that resulted in the deaths of two young children and injuries to their mother, Manipur's Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh convened an urgent Unified Command meeting on Wednesday to evaluate the state's law and order situation.
A senior representative from the Chief Minister's Office revealed that the assembly thoroughly reviewed the existing law enforcement circumstances alongside security challenges.
The official mentioned that various measures, consistent with constitutional laws, were discussed in depth to tackle immediate issues and restore peace, stability, and public safety.
According to the Chief Minister's Office, the government is resolutely dedicated to implementing all necessary actions to protect the lives and welfare of the citizens while maintaining law enforcement throughout Manipur.
The high-level meeting included attendees such as Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Chief Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, and high-ranking officials from various security forces, including the Army, Assam Rifles, Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and Sashastra Seema Bal.
Tensions escalated in Imphal on Wednesday as demonstrators attempted to breach the residences of both the Chief Minister and Home Minister, calling for their resignations due to perceived security failures that led to the death of the two minors in Bishnupur district on Tuesday morning.
Security personnel faced challenges in controlling the protesting crowd, which led to the deployment of tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
The protest was led by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, representing the Meitei community. Members from the Peace and Integrity Committee Kyamgei and All Kyamgei Meira Paibis formed a human chain along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway 2, calling for strict action against Kuki narco-terrorists in light of the recent incident.
In parallel, the state Home Minister and various Members of the Legislative Assembly, alongside representatives from the Ima Keithel (Women's Market) vendors' groups, met with the Chief Minister on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister's Office representative stated that the meeting focused on the issues and conditions currently faced by women vendors in the market. They thoroughly discussed the present circumstances and explored potential solutions to address these concerns.
The violence resulted from a horrific incident occurring at approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday, when a significant bomb, reportedly launched by suspected Kuki militants, hit a residence in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai village in Bishnupur district.
A five-year-old boy and his five-month-old sister perished instantly, while their mother suffered injuries. The victims were believed to be sleeping at the time of the explosion, which also caused severe damage to the house.
Following this, two protesters were killed, and numerous others were injured when a mob attacked a Central Reserve Police Force camp in Bishnupur. A large gathering, including women, organized massive protests condemning the tragic deaths of the two children in the bomb explosion at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai village.
Officials reported that protesters stormed a Central Reserve Police Force camp near Gelmol, located a few hundred meters from the blast site, igniting vehicles and vandalizing property.
The atmosphere remained tense yet controlled across five valley districts of Manipur on Wednesday, with curfews imposed, internet services suspended, and a heavy presence of security forces deployed.
The five districts affected – Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur – are predominantly populated by the Meitei community.
To prevent further violence, the Manipur government suspended internet and mobile data services, including broadband, for three days across these areas.
Officials stated that the suspension was critical in curbing the spread of misinformation and maintaining public order.
Moreover, an indefinite curfew has been enacted in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Kakching due to widespread protests following the killing of the children.
District Magistrates from Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, and Kakching have issued orders to enforce curfews in their respective jurisdictions from Tuesday onward.
