Chennai, July 27 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, has called upon the Central government to promptly release the state's overdue share exceeding Rs 2,100 crore under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and has reiterated the state's commitment to the two-language policy encompassing Tamil and English.
In a memorandum presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Tamil Nadu's Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Saturday, CM Stalin emphasized that the state remains opposed to the three-language policy outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
According to the memorandum, the state of Tamil Nadu has consistently voiced its dissent regarding the three-language framework and is committed to maintaining its traditional two-language formula.
Currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai after experiencing dizziness on July 21, CM Stalin had approved the memorandum prior to its formal submission to the Prime Minister during his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu.
The memorandum requested the Prime Minister to authorize the Centre's share of Rs 2,151.59 crore for the fiscal year 2024–25 under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme and to release the initial instalment for 2025-26.
Additionally, the Chief Minister urged the Centre to refrain from making the release of these funds contingent upon Tamil Nadu signing the PM SHRI agreement, which the state has reservations about.
CM Stalin pointed out that the failure to sanction the essential funds has a detrimental effect on the future of millions of students, stressing the necessity of timely financial support for the educational sector. The memorandum also included other significant requests, such as the Centre's approval for proposed metro rail projects in Coimbatore and Madurai, which are to be implemented under a 50:50 cost-sharing model between the state and the Centre.
He further advocated for the swift execution of pending railway infrastructure projects and an increase in suburban rail services in Chennai to alleviate commuter pressure.
Expressing concern over the repeated detentions of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, the Chief Minister called for a sustainable diplomatic resolution to this issue and requested immediate measures for the release of Tamil Nadu fishermen and their vessels currently held in Sri Lankan custody.
During his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Modi is set to inaugurate pivotal development projects and engage in cultural activities.
