Veteran journalist Payal Mehta, who served as Assistant Editor at CNN-News18, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, 20 September in Mumbai. She was 46. Her sudden death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from across the political spectrum, including from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

How It Happened

According to colleagues, Mehta developed uneasiness late on Saturday night and was rushed to a hospital at around 2 am. Doctors found no pulse upon her arrival, and she passed away before any treatment could be administered. The cause of death has not been officially disclosed.

PM Modi and Rajnath Singh Pay Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X to mourn her passing. 'Payal Mehta Ji was a hardworking journalist who remained firmly connected to the ground, bringing a deep understanding of national issues to her reporting,' Modi wrote. 'Beyond her work, she will be remembered for the kindness and warmth with which she touched so many lives. Her sudden and untimely passing is extremely saddening. My condolences to her family, friends and colleagues. May they find strength in this difficult hour. Om Shanti,' he added.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also took to X to express shock. 'Deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the untimely passing of journalist Payal Mehta. She has left us far too soon,' Singh said. He specifically highlighted her dedication to the Parliament beat: 'Payal was an extremely hardworking and dedicated journalist who covered the Parliament beat with great commitment and professionalism. During Parliament sessions, she would be present from early morning till late at night, tirelessly following the proceedings.'

Congress President Offers Condolences

Indian National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge remembered Mehta as a 'hardworking and diligent journalist' who had 'a keen understanding of public affairs.' In a post on X, Kharge said, 'Deeply saddened by the passing of Payal Mehta ji... Her untimely passing is deeply distressing.' He extended heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.

Mehta was widely recognised among parliamentary press corps members for her tireless coverage of Parliament sessions, often tracking legislative proceedings from dawn to late night. Her colleagues described her as deeply committed to ground-level journalism and national affairs.
