Mumbai, Oct 10 (NationPress) On Friday, the Congress party launched a comprehensive campaign throughout the state in alliance with 25 different organizations to promote affordable housing in Maharashtra.
The head of the state party unit, Harshwardhan Sapkal, emphasized that this initiative was essential as housing costs in Mumbai and the broader state have escalated beyond the means of ordinary citizens.
“The affordable housing scheme introduced by the Congress government proves to be highly advantageous and should be executed on a grander scale. The 33/33/33 formula for mill land development allocates 33 percent of land intended for public use to industrialists, ultimately sidelining the public. We aim to halt this practice and ensure that affordable housing projects are prioritized on these lands,” he stated.
Sapkal continued: “It was the Congress government that first initiated affordable housing through the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and aimed to provide homes for mill workers. Out of the 110,000 homes promised to mill workers, only 15,000 have been delivered so far. The remaining mill lands are being transferred to industrialists. The BJP-led Mahayuti government is effectively auctioning Mumbai, bestowing benefits on their favored business associates. Much like the Delhi leadership's favoritism, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is cultivating his own select group of industrialists, granting them land and housing opportunities.”
In a related note, Sapkal criticized Cooperation Minister Balasaheb Patil for his statement claiming that “farmers have become addicted to loan waivers,” labeling it as both irresponsible and shameless.
“When farmers are suffering tremendously, such comments only deepen their pain. The ministers in the Fadnavis government display arrogance and ignorance. By uttering such remarks, they reveal the emptiness of their administration's promises. These ministers ought to be dismissed, yet unfortunately, CM Fadnavis continues to protect them—this is a true tragedy for Maharashtra,” he remarked.
Sapkal also mentioned that preparations for local body elections are actively underway. Review meetings are taking place in all districts, and voter list verification is ongoing.
Applications from potential candidates are being accepted and will be processed through district Congress committees before reaching the state committee, which will make the final decisions. He clarified that decisions regarding alliances for local body elections will be made locally.
