Kolkata, May 30 (NationPress) The Congress has officially named Kabil Uddin Shaikh as its candidate for the upcoming June 19 bypoll for the Kaliganj Assembly seat situated in West Bengal's Nadia district.
As of now, the CPI-M-led Left Front has not revealed any candidates, leaving uncertainty about whether the traditional Congress-Left Front seat-sharing deal initiated during the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections will persist. This could lead to a four-way contest involving the ruling Trinamool Congress, the BJP, the Congress, and the Left Front.
Similarly, the BJP has yet to announce its candidate for the bypoll.
The Trinamool Congress has recently put forth Alifa Ahmed as its nominee for the Kaliganj bypoll. At 38 years old, Alifa is the daughter of the incumbent legislator, Nasiruddin Ahmed, whose unexpected passing in February this year prompted the need for the bypoll.
Kaliganj is one of five Assembly constituencies across four states set for bypolls on June 19, alongside Kadi and Visavdar in Gujarat, Ludhiana West in Punjab, and Nilambur in Kerala.
The deadline for nominations is June 2, followed by nomination scrutiny on June 3, and the last date for withdrawal of candidacies is June 5. Counting will occur on June 23.
Earlier this week, the Chief Electoral Officer for West Bengal announced that 20 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will be deployed for the Kaliganj bypolls, with arrangements expected to be in place by next week.
The final electoral list for Kaliganj, published on May 9, showed a reduction of over 2,000 voters compared to the electorate during the 2021 Assembly elections, following a special summary revision by the Chief Electoral Officer's office.
