Kolkata, May 31 (NationPress) On Saturday, the BJP officially declared Ashish Ghosh as its candidate for the upcoming bypoll in the Kaliganj assembly constituency located in Nadia district, West Bengal, which is set for June 19. This bypoll is expected to feature a competitive three-way contest among the Trinamool Congress, BJP, and a Congress candidate supported by the CPI (M)-led Left Front.
The Trinamool Congress was the first to announce its candidate for the Kaliganj bypoll on May 27. The ruling party's candidate is Alifa Ahmed, daughter of the late Nasiruddin Ahmed, a former Trinamool Congress legislator from Kaliganj. His unexpected passing in February has prompted these by-elections.
On Friday, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) revealed that Kabil Uddin Shaikh would represent the party in the bypoll. Following an internal discussion, the Left Front opted to support the Congress candidate.
Eventually, on Saturday, the BJP revealed its candidate's name.
During the previous assembly elections in 2021, Nasiruddin Ahmed was elected, defeating BJP's Abhijit Ghosh by a significant margin of 46,987 votes. The Congress candidate backed by the Left Front, Abul Kashem, finished third, obtaining only 25,076 votes.
Kaliganj is one of five assembly constituencies across three states scheduled for by-elections on June 19, alongside Kadi and Visavadar in Gujarat, Ludhiana-West in Punjab, and Nilambur in Kerala.
The vote counting will take place on June 23. The deadline for nominations is June 2, with the scrutiny of nominations set for June 3. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 5.
Earlier this week, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal announced that 20 companies of central armed police forces (CAPF) would be deployed for the Kaliganj by-elections, with deployment expected to conclude by next week.
Earlier this month, on May 9, the final electoral list for Kaliganj was published, indicating a decline of over 2,000 voters compared to the 2021 Assembly elections. This final list was released following a special summary revision by the CEO's office in West Bengal.
